Horsham Gateway Consultation

(published by: website administrator)

01/07/2010

from West Sussex County Council-

Have your say on ‘Horsham gateway’ proposals

Proposals to provide a gateway feature at Horsham railway station have been unveiled by West Sussex County Council.

Improvements to the station are currently being taken forward by Network Rail and Southern, with work due to start later this year.

To complement these improvements the County Council has decided to look at the bus interchange to the front of the station and the surrounding area.

“We want to enhance the environment to the front of the station to create a gateway feature for Horsham,” said Lionel Barnard, Deputy Leader of the County Council with responsibility for Highway and Transport.

“The pedestrian area outside the station is narrow and cramped, walking routes in the area around the station are poor and not well signed and there are not enough places to leave bicycles securely.

“Our proposals will address these issues, improve access to the station and make people’s journeys easier.”

Public exhibitions are being held to ask people what they think about the County Council’s proposals, which include:

• Close the existing access road immediately in front of the station to create a pedestrianised area.

• Improve pedestrian routes across North Street and through the bus and taxi area towards the town centre.

• Expand and improve passenger waiting facilities at the bus and taxi interchange and provide new bus shelters.

• Provide electronic Real Time Bus Information at the bus stops and in the station itself.

• Relocate the car parking facilities currently to the south of the station and reorganise it to provide better facilities for taxis and passenger drop off/pick up.

• Improve cycle parking with new shelters and CCTV monitoring.

The public exhibitions are being held at various locations around Horsham during July and August:

• July 7 to August 4 - Horsham Library, Lower Tanbridge Way, Horsham.

• August 4 to August 27 - West Sussex County Council, County Hall North, Chart Way, Horsham.

• July 21 to August 4 - Horsham Railway Station, North Street, Horsham.

People can also have their say on the proposals by logging onto the County Council website - www.westsussex.gov.uk (link below)– and clicking on ‘roads and transport’ and then ‘walking and cycling’.
